about

Glasgow is great at spurting out music destined to be an isolated gem. This is not the hope for Ven but I have the feeling it comes from this. There are moments in the city’s cracks in which the narrative is broken and like invasive branches, different musical constelations sprout unexpected music that speaks for different aural ideas.

Ven does this, at least to me. It punches a whole through imaginary sandstone, pushing through noise, which in all fairness its not alone in the city’s underground history but it’s isolated.

Every five years or so ugly beautiful harsh music appears as if from nowhere and rips the shit out of whatever current pastel laced lineups are infesting the basements at the time. In a way that it seems uninformed of previous abrasive sprouts, this music flourishes and unflourishes in a weird mud laced loop.

I fantasise of a different loop, where formally from hand to hand this noise is passed on, creating instead of a loop, a spiral that unites all the freaks which burst their eardrums at a basement on a Thursday night. But that is not how Glasgow functions. It is all passed on in an unspoken set of quasi human contact, probably because we really hate human contact.

I don’t know where Ven is going. I feel like I know where they come from. I also know that I have no idea for either statement and that is why I’m drawn to them. I feel represented by Ven as much as I’m completely alienated from it. That’s why in Glasgow there is so much heavy nasty noise under the cracks.
